MEXICO CITY -- In the past 30 years, the number of Mexicans migrating every year to the United States has more than tripled, reports La Raza. Mexican immigrants have expanded their presence to most of the 50 states, with numbers increasing by nearly 700 percent in regions that traditionally had little appeal for them like North Dakota and West Virginia. Mexican immigration currently represents 32 of the total migration to the United States, according to a study by the National Population Council. The study also shows that efforts to thwart illegal migration have not stopped the flow of Mexican immigrants. Instead, these efforts have lead migrants to find new strategies for crossing the border, often through more dangerous terrain. U.S. officials have reported more migration-related deaths in the first nine months of this year than in all of 2008.
